"An athlete cannot run with money in his pockets. He must run with hope in his heart and dreams in his head."
Physical Education is an integral part of holistic development of a child. It is important, because 1. It’s a link to good health.
The value of physical fitness can never be overstated. It’s only in physical educational classrooms that students learn the value of taking care of themselves thru proper grooming, healthy eating and regular exercise.
2. It’s a preventive measure against disease.
Many doctors today agree that obesity is a serious health risk. Without any form of diet management and control with the numerous processed food students intake everyday compounded by a sedentary lifestyle, a student’s health can easily be at risk to many diseases like chronic heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Physical education in school is a preventive measure to teach students the value of regular exercise.
3. It’s a program for muscle strength and fitness.
Physical education develops the students’ motor skills and hand-eye coordination. It also develops the upper body muscles through activities like doing push ups as well the lower body muscles through stationary jumping jacks, 3min running and jumping exercises. Programs usually have core training exercises also like doing abdominal crunches.
4. It promotes academic learning.
Physical health allows students to function even better in classrooms. A good cardiovascular system developed from regular exercise promotes excellent blood and oxygen circulation. This means more nutrients circulate through out the body which includes the brain. This circulation produces longer attention span during classes allowing longer concentration and absorption.
5. It builds self esteem.
Students who are active in physical activities like basketball, volleyball, martial arts and running just to name a few are more confident with themselves according to most social school studies. It’s probably because of the self discipline and dedication to excel in a sport that brings out the best in students. In school, the physical education program introduces these sport activities to students allowing them to make choices to which sport areas they want to get involved in.
6. It develops cooperation, teamwork and sportsmanship skill.
Most physical education programs are holistic. The program allows student to interact together to a common goal and that is to win and excel physically. It brings out the competitive sides of students working both body and mind but also promotes sportsmanship.
7. It promotes a physically active lifestyle.
The purpose of physical education is to instill in students, at an early age, the value of self preservation and choosing a lifestyle that is good for both the mind and body.
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy", a popular proverb sums it all. Without a balanced approach towards education, a child will only have a lopsided perspective. He will not be able to appreciate the other finer aspects of life, if only studies are in his mind. It is often perceived that sports is a complete waste of time and instead, students should utilise their time in learning and studying. However, such thinking needs to change, as sports has its own benefits.
Advantages of sports education:
Making children active and agile: With the invent of Internet, computers and television, children these days are leading a sedentary lifestyle, either being glued on their TV sets or playing/surfing on their computers. This has led to various lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart problems even in kids. Also, obesity has become a major challenge in these children. In order to combat these issues, it is important to inculcate the habit of playing outside or develop a passion for sports that would ensure certain amount of physical exercises.
Developing mental abilities: In order to play any sports, together with physical ability, it is also important to create mental faculties of the players. A child is taught to sharpen his problem solving abilities, take instant decisions, and handle pressure situations while on the field. These skills are also important in personal life as well, and help in developing the overall personality of a student.
Nurturing sportsmanship spirit: Sportsmanship spirit teaches to be fair and ethical in one’s conduct, strives to have a winning attitude and even while being in the losing team, should be graceful in one’s behavior. Such an attitude is also essential in equipping a person with life skills and to face various challenges in one’s life.
Initiating team building: A person cannot work in silo, it is essential for people to work together to create greater impact. When a child learns any sports, he is also taught the basics of being a team member and how a match could be won only through team collaboration. He is told that besides individual brilliance, team effort is also needed for success.
Giving wings to passions: Many kids are passionate about sports. They often want to become a sportsperson rather than an academician. A parent should respect the interest of their children and encourage their kids to take up this passion and translate it into a profession.
Sports in fact, is the medium through which a child is initiated into another dimension altogether. He is shown another perspective to nurture his curiosity and channelize his energy in a positive manner. So, next time when you go for your child education, ensure to check these small details. These surely would go a long way in the holistic development of your child.
– Emil Zatopek
Sports prepare a child to become a liberal individual who understands the nature of teamwork and apply the sporting spirit in all aspects of life. Sporting activities play a very important role in the holistic development of students and inculcating values like optimism, belief in oneself and the ability to face all the challenges.
We, at Carmel Convent School, aim at providing the best of sports facilities for our students. The school has well maintained grounds for different games like Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Throwball, Skating, Lawn Tennis, Chess etc.
Experienced and professional coaches train the students and prepare them for the various tournaments conducted within and outside the school.

First Annual Report - Sri Nachammal Vidyavani by Principal P S Narayanan
Annual Report – 2013 - 2014
A warm “welcome aboard” to each one of you.
We appreciate your gesture of considering Sri Nachammal Vidyavani as the best option for your child.
As an educational institution, we stand proud in building 21st century skills of our young bubbling ‘Nachammalians’. We are delighted and take pride in uniting with you in the holistic development of your bundle of joy.
Attitude and habits are formed very early in one’s life. What children learn in their impressionable child hood years stays with them throughout their lives. And, children, as we all know constitute the future of nation.
Success occurs when opportunities and preparation meet. The opportunities are given by God and preparation was done by teachers and students.
As you see our school Sri Nachammal Vidyavani is a nine months old toddler, but it has proven that one month’s growth is equal to one year. If you say, our baby has grown up to nine years old also, nobody will doubt about it.
As we look back, the academic year 2013-2014 has brought many accomplishments and also made us see the gaps in some areas where there is definite scope for improvement.

Parent Orientation
Parents, being the first teacher, have the potential to play an immensely proactive role. Parents must become the role models for their wards as children emulate them. That both, men and women are like the proverbial complementary wheels of progress, necessary for the development of human race is an idea that ought to be firmly rooted in the mindsets of our young citizens. We must maintain in our homes an atmosphere of mutual regard, respect, courtesies and good manners. Our children will then effortlessly imbibe these values. All these would result in a society of well groomed citizens with deep convictions about human rights that one would never think of violating. It is only then, we shall be able to call ourselves as civilized society.
Here children are inspired to do good deed and ask them to record it in their student planner. A special place is reserved in the student Planner for this purpose.
Nachamalians celebrate all Tuesdays as ‘No TV Day’. They were encouraged to utilize the time saved by not watching the TV on that day for spending quality time with their family members. Also it is a preparation day for the assessment too.

The members of management committee, parent community have always extended their assistance in enriching the learning experiences of Nachammaliians. I take this opportunity to thank you for your unstinted support.
Last, but not the least, that staff and students of the school deserve a special mention for the consistent diligence, sincerity and devotion with which they continue to persevere zealously in achieving excellence in all aspects of learning at school.
